Name: Saturday Buddha or ปางนาคปรก (Pang Nak Prok) The Buddha Sheltered by the Naga King
The Appearance:
The Buddha is depicted in a sitting meditation posture (Samadhi Mudra) with his hands resting palms-up on his lap. Behind him, a giant Naga (serpent king) named Mucalinda rises up, spreading its seven-headed hood to form a protective canopy over the Buddha’s head. The coils of the Naga often serve as a cushion for the Buddha to sit upon.
Story: During the sixth week after reaching Enlightenment, the Buddha was meditating under a Muchalinda tree. A heavy rainstorm and cold winds swept the area for seven days. To protect the Buddha from the elements and wandering insects, the Naga King Mucalinda emerged from the earth, coiled his body around the Buddha, and used his great hood as a shelter to keep the Buddha dry and warm.
Symbolism: This posture represents protection, resilience, and tranquility amidst turmoil. For those born on Saturday, it is believed to bring peace and protection from danger.
